Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. It joins residues 4 to 7 of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) to the tripeptide Pro-Gly-Pro, and the literature also calls it ACTH(4-7)-Pro-Gly-Pro or an ACTH(4-10) analog. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is studied mainly in rat models of cerebral ischemia and in copper-binding chemistry.

Supplied for laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use, and not for diagnostic or therapeutic application.

About Semax

Structure of Semax

Semax is a linear chain of seven L-amino acids: methionine, glutamic acid, histidine, phenylalanine, proline, glycine and proline, with free N- and C-termini. The first four residues match positions 4 to 7 of ACTH, and the last three replace the Arg-Trp-Gly that would complete ACTH(4-10). PubChem lists it under the title ACTH (4-7), Pro-Gly-Pro- with the one-letter sequence MEHFPGP. It contains one thioether, in the methionine side chain, and one imidazole, in histidine. Selank, from the same institute, shares the Pro-Gly-Pro tail but begins with the tuftsin sequence instead of an ACTH fragment.

Where Semax comes from

Semax comes from the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, whose staff are authors on the two animal studies cited here. A 2025 paper from that institute describes it as a hybrid molecule carrying the ACTH(4-7) fragment and the Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide, with the tripeptide added to increase resistance to peptidases, and states that it has no hormonal activity. The same paper calls it a long-used peptide drug in Russia. The names found in the literature are Semax, ACTH(4-7)PGP and ACTH(4-10) analog; all three refer to the one sequence.

What Semax binds

No single receptor has been established for Semax in the sources opened for this profile; a 2014 genome-wide paper states that the molecular mechanisms underlying its action remain obscure. Two kinds of molecular data exist. In rat brain tissue after experimental ischemia, Semax changed the transcription of genes related to the immune and vascular systems. In solution chemistry, a 2015 study found that Semax binds copper(II) with high affinity, forming a dominant complex above pH 5 in which four nitrogen atoms surround the metal in a planar arrangement, and a 2022 study examined its influence on copper-induced aggregation of amyloid beta in artificial membranes.

Semax in the research literature

The best-documented animal system is permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion in adult male Wistar rats, where a 2014 BMC Genomics study profiled expression of 22,226 genes in cortex 3 and 24 hours after occlusion. Cell work includes copper toxicity assays in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma and RBE4 endothelial lines. A 2025 study compared Semax with the derivative Met-Glu-Asp-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro in APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic mice and counted amyloid inclusions in cortex and hippocampus by Congo red staining. The Russian papers refer to use in people there, but a search of ClinicalTrials.gov for Semax returns no registered study.

Regulatory status of Semax

Semax is not approved by the FDA, and a search of Drugs@FDA returns no application under its name. In Russia its standing is different: a 2025 paper from the Institute of Molecular Genetics states that Semax is included in the Russian List of Vital and Essential Drugs for Medical Application, citing Government Decree No. 2406-r of October 12, 2019. That decree was not opened for this profile. Anhydrolabs supplies it as a reference reagent for in-vitro laboratory research only, not for human or veterinary diagnosis, treatment, or consumption.

Handling Semax in the laboratory

The material is a lyophilized powder in a vacuum-sealed vial. Keep it frozen at -4 °F and protected from light. Let the vial reach room temperature before breaking the seal, so that moisture from the air does not condense on the cold powder. Once dissolved for in-vitro work, a solution keeps for about four weeks at 39 °F. Divide a stock solution into single-use aliquots instead of freezing and thawing it repeatedly. No compound-specific solubility or stability figure for Semax was found in a primary source. Its sequence includes a methionine, a residue whose sulfur can oxidize, and its affinity for copper(II) is a reason to avoid trace-metal contamination in buffers.

Semax: common questions

What is Semax supplied as?

Semax is supplied as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder in a vacuum-sealed vial, in 5 mg and 10 mg, for in-vitro laboratory research use only.

Is Semax available as a 10-vial kit?

Yes. Semax comes in a 10-vial kit: 5 mg for $112.50 ($11.25 per vial); 10 mg for $180.00 ($18.00 per vial), presale prices. A kit is ten sealed vials of the same size, priced below ten single vials.

When do Semax presale kits ship?

By Dec 12, 2026. Presale kits are 10% off. If we cannot ship by Dec 12, 2026, we tell you before that date and you can cancel for a full refund.

What is the CAS number of Semax?

The CAS registry number of Semax is 80714-61-0.

How should Semax be stored?

Frozen at −4 °F and protected from light, from the day it arrives. Let the vial reach room temperature before breaking the seal; once reconstituted, stability holds for about four weeks refrigerated at 39 °F.

How fast does Semax ship?

Presale kits ship from the United States by Dec 12, 2026, to US addresses. Sizes marked in stock ship within 1 business day of payment.

Is Semax for human use?

No. It is supplied as a reference reagent for laboratory research use. Not for human or veterinary use, and not for diagnostic or therapeutic application.

What is the sequence of Semax?

Semax is Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro, or MEHFPGP in one-letter code. The first four residues are positions 4 to 7 of adrenocorticotropic hormone and the last three are a Pro-Gly-Pro extension. All seven are L-amino acids and both ends are unmodified.

Is Semax a fragment of ACTH?

Only in part. Semax contains ACTH residues 4 to 7, Met-Glu-His-Phe, but its last three residues are Pro-Gly-Pro and do not come from the hormone. Papers from the developing institute state that Semax has no hormonal activity.

Is Semax approved by the FDA?

No. Drugs@FDA lists no application for Semax. A 2025 paper from the Institute of Molecular Genetics states that it is on the Russian List of Vital and Essential Drugs for Medical Application under a 2019 government decree, which is a Russian standing and has no effect in the United States.
